SELF-CATERING

Broadstone
February 2003

THIS ‘comedy in six scenes’, which is set in a self-catering holiday apartment somewhere in England, was written several years ago by director Marion Watson but is only now being performed for the first time.
The action takes place over a six-week period and each scene is totally self-contained, with various links, including the presence of proprietor Mrs Barton, providing continuity.
It is extremely well constructed, with elements of both humour and pathos and a variety of highly believable characters of all ages. They range from a honeymoon couple, a henpecked husband and his wife and a shady businessman and his secretary to a couple of convicts, an elderly American couple and two lonely ‘singletons’.
Almost every scene was strong in terms of both content and performance but my personal gold stars would go to James Cooke and Tom Sainsbury as an hilarious gay couple who were not what they seemed and to Judy Garrett and John Pemble, whose sensitive portrayal of middle-aged despair and hope was intensely moving.
The hard-working cast, which also included Verna Long, Sophie Osborn, Rod Gilbert and Tommy Egerton, played a total of fifteen characters between them, often covering two or more contrasting roles.
