THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS
Poulner Players
Church Hall
Linford Road
Poulner
February 2006

ON a cold wet evening we were transported to a lovely summer’s day on the riverbank as Mole blinked in the sunshine and Ratty rowed gently down the river.
The multi-level and ingenious set held surprises in every scene, from Ratty’s home to the lurking Evil Weasels led menacingly by Mike Freemantle. With clever use of lighting and revolving stage we were swiftly transported to all the different riverbank locations and the play moved along as smoothly and gently as the river. Sheryle Daniels’ direction made good use of the stage with the large enthusiastic cast and treated us to a delightful version of “In The Bleak Midwinter”.
Following his adventures as he meets the world-wise Ratty, dapperly played by Peter Ansell, the innocent Mole encounters the stern but kindly Badger given great power by Simon Sketchley and a horse called Albert, a lovely morose performance from John Turpin.
. Steven Reynolds’ Mole was delightfully naive, becoming a good friend to Toad, a wonderful comic tour-de-force by Rita McDermott whose facial expressions had me grinning all the time she was on stage. Just the thought of Toad’s first encounter with a motorcar sets me smiling. As Toad said, “Poop! Poop!”
