WHITE CHRISTMAS
Unison Theatrical Choir With West Moors Drama Society
Memorial Hall West Moors December 2005
Christmas celebrations started splendidly with this festive offering of music, words and laughter by the Unison Choir, supplemented by the West Moors Drama Society.
A Dickensian theme to the First Act was beautifully enhanced by the drawing room setting, complete with Christmas tree, blazing fire, piano and elegant attire. The eleven-strong choir entertained with song and spoken “party pieces” and that worked well. In contrast, five talented West Moors actors entertained us with a hilarious one-act play entitled “Thank you, Mr Dickens”. The” ladies of the night” bemoaned the lack of business – and gin – in Victorian England, only to be visited by Charles Dickens with money to spend. Wonderful!
Act Two opened with stunning white and silver outfits and the choir in modern mode. Unfortunately the temperamental keyboard used to accompany the items proved distracting, emphasising the excellent playing of the piano during the Dickensian section. However, Musical Director Sue Oldrey worked hard to produce some unusual arrangements of Yuletide songs familiar and lesser known while the delightful “Come to our Nativity Play” was a comedy gem. More dazzling outfits emerged before the final curtain but I did miss a finale carol or seasonal favourite with which to join in.
