VICTORY PARADE
Quintet Theatre Company
Cecil Hall Cranborne October 2005
An atmosphere of the 1940s was created immediately with tickets replicating the front cover of a ration book, for this revue to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War 2. Original recording of Henry Hall and his orchestra made an appropriate overture and all members of this emerging company threw themselves into a series of sketches, interspersed with musical interludes.
Some of the references, to the Blairs and Anne Robinson particularly, confused me somewhat, as did the glamorous modern dresses but the sketches set in the days during and after the War were enjoyable. Victoria Eldon lit up the stage as Holiday Queen Miss Potting Hill and Director/Producer Glenwood Carlyon amused with his cameo appearances as the man who enjoyed digging for victory. The musical numbers worked well and recordings of Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields and other echoes of bygone days were evocative. It was grand to join in with so many wonderful old songs and Jerry Laker and Geoffrey Walton brought the house down with their selection of Flanagan and Allen favourites.
Supper in the British Restaurant rounded off a nostalgic evening and a resounding Bravo for the superb programme in patriotic red, white and blue.
