TOAD OF TOAD HALL
Godshill Players
Village Hall Godshill April 2006
This classic tale of the characters who inhabit the riverbank and forest came to life vividly under the skilful direction of Kate Charman.
From tree-lined river to the homely Badger House and on to Toad Hall, every set was splendid and each principal added a touch of magic. Young Mole was well portrayed by Charlotte Sampson while Ratty – Bridget Marriott – showed a kindly and sensible side. Geoff Phillips towered over the proceedings as the solemn Badger (I loved the black and white striped head) while Toad, with a selection of bizarre costumes, was played with great exuberance by Lynne Pearson. There were a quartet of humans with cameo roles but it was the animals who excelled. Every wicked rodent, complete with tails, whiskers and fluffy ears, was delightful while Sam Lemon, Mike Young and Frazer Nadin as Chief Ferret, Weasel and Stoat showed promise
.
It was a great idea to show a film of the swaggering Toad in the vintage cars which he always crashed and the scary scene in the wild wood was emphasized with clever use of ultra violet light. An entertaining and animated production by youngsters and seasoned players alike and a pleasant escape from reality.
