THE SWORD IN THE STONE
Castle Players
Village Hall Lytchett Matravers January 2006
This show was a merry medieval romp in Camelot, with a much better than average script, colourful costumes and excellent scenery. In fact it had everything a good panto should have and then some.
The Jester (Pete Griffiths) had his work cut out to move a cold opening night audience, but his persistence paid off and he won in the end. The Dame (Dave Clements) was a force to be reckoned with, as was Morgan Le Fay (Linsey O'Neill). There was a great triple act from the three knights (Chris Bunn, Tony Collins and Richard Brown), or should I say the Three Stooges.
In general the singing voices were all quite weak with the exception of Gemma Harvey who was a sparky and spirited Arthur. Sensibly, most of the songs were offset by comedy which covered any shortcomings in that department. For me, however, the pearl of the evening was Mordred the Black (Harry Susser). His sycophantic and besotted fawning was like a demented Mr.Bean, and that pathetic CPR on his fallen mistress was hilarious.
The children were nicely schooled and dressed, and the whole cast exuded fun. The director (Fran Hollis) has pulled a fine production together.
