RUTHLESS! The Musical
Theatre 2000
St Mark's Hall Highcliffe March 2006
Director Albert Brown has excelled with a larger than life spoof production which is brilliant.
A parody on ambitious mothers, precocious daughters and America’s theatrical hierarchy finds a cast of six talented females extracting every laugh from this tuneful send-up. Louise King is superb as Judy Denmark, initially content to be “Just Tina’s Mother” while her eight year old daughter wants stardom. As Tina, Soraya Scrivener captures the wide-eyed, be-ribboned ingénue so well that it is totally believable. Sweet until the lead in the school play goes to Louise – splendidly nasal Gaynor Adnett – then the phrase “I’d kill for that part” becomes reality. Lita Encore, shallow theatre critic, is well portrayed by Valerie Gillard while Kamya Rawston Brake as drama teacher Myrna Thorn gives a perfect performance, doubling up as Miss Block. Gaynor also appears in a second role but it is Glinys Luff as Sylvia St. Croix who commands the stage with an over the top portrayal of the impresario who moulds gifted children but has a secret.
Every last lady delivers fine comic timing, an ability to interpret the difficult musical score and above all, great entertainment. Don’t miss this knockout musical at the Regent, Christchurch from Friday.
