THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE
Bournemouth Gilbert& Sullivan Society
The Lighthouse
Poole
October 2005

This was an exuberant celebration of all things Gilbert and Sullivan. The beautifully modulated orchestra, conducted by Jean Holt, was delicate, rowdy or twee as dictated by the Old Masters.
The action was directed by Roberta Morrell with a deft lightness of touch that kept the effervescence bubbling until curtain down. The ‘business’ was inventive and funny, and not a single lampoon was missed.
Poor Frederic (Bruce Vyner) of the rich voice, so pathetically earnest. Poor Mabel (Jemma Truss) sweet faced, sweet voiced and woe-begone. Poor Major-General Stanley (Robin Lavies) with so many words to cram in. Poor everybody as is usual in a G& S farce. Everyone, that is, except Ruth. (Cathy Murray) What a tough cookie, delightfully common and extrovert. You had to be quick to catch her gag at the end with the Police Sergeant (Ian Metcalf), but it was worth it.
The corps of Policemen did a nice line in comedy as lily-livered Keystone Cops, and the power of the ladies chorus could knock your socks off. Add the pretty frocks and swashbuckling Pirates and you have a fine production from this long established company who know exactly what they are doing.
