THE PASSING OF THE THIRD FLOOR BACK
Bournemouth Little Theatre Club
The Little Theatre Winton, Bournemouth December 2005
JEROME K Jerome is probably best known for his Three Men in a Boat, yet this rarely performed play is absolutely charming.
It is described as “an idle fancy in a prologue, a play and an epilogue”, but “idle fancy” is far too glib an expression to describe something so moving, heart-warming and indicative of the true meaning of the Christmas spirit.
Under the sure direction of Geoff Whipp the lives of the inhabitants of a London boarding house, who are changed beyond recognition by the arrival of a newcomer in their midst, are realistically created in this outstanding production.
Within an extremely strong cast there are several truly memorable characterisations, and none perhaps more so than that of Jonathan Rogers, whose mesmerising presence and stillness as the newest resident of the hitherto unhappy household is totally captivating.
Philip Redgrave (Jape Samuels), Jemma Sander-Heys (Mrs De Hooley), Lolly Endacott (Mrs Sharpe) and Angela Whyatt (Miss Kite) also make a great impression, while 16 year-old Hayleigh Birks (Stasia) proves once again that she is an extremely accomplished actress.
And, as usual, the Club’s meticulous attention to detail in both set design and props adds reams to the overall effect.
