MOROCCAN TWIST
Ferndown Drama Group
Barrington Theatre Ferndown January 2006
Ferndown Drama Group have picked a winner this time. The play, set in 1938, is a delicious pot pourri of every spy, detective and gangster movie you have ever seen. The whole cast have well defined and recognisable characters from the past. Indeed the sub-plot for the audience should have been “Spot the movie”.
The body count rises scene by scene, of course, until the end, when the pile of corpses looks like a collapsed rugby scrum. The main anchor is Lou Hopper the gum-shoe, played with just the right balance of aplomb and tongue in cheek by Steve Hawker. His side kick, Sharleen (Dawn Hollington) is a wonderfully common Bronx broad, and the two Chinamen (Richard Harker and Stephen James) are the funniest assassins you could hope to see.
The scenery was excellent as were the scene changes. The backstage crew seemed to be on the ball, and the links were ably covered by the singers from Jubilate. Their ‘a capella’ renditions of hits of that era were easy on the ear.
The evening flew by and we all wanted it to go on, but that would have been a bit difficult with only one man left standing.
