THE FULL MONTY
Theatre 2000
Regent Centre
Christchurch
September 2005

A successful film is hard to follow but Theatre 2000, directed by Albert Brown, relish a challenge. This bold and brassy musical was slow to start and the minimalist sets seemed stark but the story of modern life in Buffalo, New York soon gathered momentum.
Relationships between the guys, left on the scrap heap after their steel factory closed and the girls, with jobs and power, were explored in depth while more complex pairings were movingly uncovered. Accident-prone Ethan, cheerily played by Mike Purnell, was rather caricatured but I enjoyed pigeon-chested Malcolm, brilliantly played with a touch of Frank Spencer by Dale Waterworth. When they were joined by Jerry - a strong performance by Andrew Rawstron - Dave (Simon Fry), Noah “The Horse” (Malcolm Clarke) and Harold (Martin Mansfield) the fun really started. Rehearsals for the Hot Metal strippers were skilfully handled by Jeanette – a glorious cameo by Karen Wells - who had an eye for talent and wonderful facial expressions.
Perhaps the balance of pathos and humour didn’t always work but in the finale, as the guys stripped to an audience of 1000 including their amazed and admiring girls, I could forgive them anything. And –yes – they did The Full Monty!
