THE MIRACLE WORKER
Bournemouth Little Theatre Club
The Little Theatre Jameson Road Bournemouth April 2006
JUST how much the life of deaf, dumb and blind child Helen Keller was transformed by Annie Sullivan has been well documented. It makes for powerful theatre in the hands of a company that can do the story justice – and BLTC is one such company.
Director Dan Brian firmly believes that a review should tell it like it is and, mindful of that, I was determined that if there were any negative aspects I would air them – but I could find none.
As Helen’s well-meaning but ultimately misguided parents and half-brother James, Cathy Murray, David Weeks and Paul Oliver were so successful in their interpretations that I began to hate their characters for their narrow-mindedness, and gave a silent cheer when James finally saw the light.
Tanya Alexander, superb as ever, totally portrayed both vocally and physically the emotional anguish and frustration of the teacher groping for a solution, while her real-life daughter Megan coped beautifully with the role of Helen, conveying everything necessary in her facial expressions & body language.
All I ask of theatre is that the performers should make me believe that what I am watching is real life, not pretence. It doesn’t come much more real than this.
