LAST PANTO IN LITTLE GRIMLEY
or WHITTY DICKY
Zenith Theatre Company
St Aldhelm's Hall
Branksome
Poole
March 2006

THANKFULLY, there can be few amateur dramatic societies in quite the same league as that portrayed in this one-act comedy, in which the four remaining members unwisely choose to perform a pantomime. And as banana skins, set builders and the cast do their worst, disaster follows disaster.
Zenith’s production was, however, anything but a disaster, and the cast – Len Murray, Sheila Garrett, Ann Whitaker and Mark Hampshaw – characterised their roles well. However, their grasp of lines was somewhat shaky at times, and a little more ‘oomph’ would have helped.
The home-grown (by Ann Whitaker) Whitty Dicky was, on the other hand, a fast-moving show. Loosely based on Dick Whittington, it had numerous catchy vocal numbers and not too much libretto. And, as usual, sets and costumes, also courtesy of Ann, were bright and colourful.
There were some super performances, not least from the very personable Mechelle (correct) Summers (Dick Whitty), Rosemary Witcher (Cat) and Laura Hampshaw (Alice). I was also very taken with Len Murray’s attitude-filled Fairy Godmother, and it was good to see that every individual in the cast was given his or her turn in the spotlight – an opportunity they seized with obvious pleasure.
