JUSTICE IS A WOMAN
Ferndown Drama Group
Barrington Theatre
Ferndown
October 2005

This play is long and verbose, and places great demands on the actors. There are no tricks, gags or gimmicks to lighten the load. The whole evening relied on the not inconsiderable acting talents of this very efficient cast.
The direction by Martin Bellchamber was clean and unobtrusive, as it should be. The set was well constructed and used, but would the stage management team avoid hitting the curtains while scene changing, and put the ‘deads’ on the curtain ropes before opening night?
The eponymous Woman of Justice QC Julia Stanford is, of course, the pivotal role, and the play stands or fails on her. What a good job they had Dawn Hollington to shoulder the burden. She has a powerful presence and, with a little more of her controlled emotion through gritted teeth, her explosions of raw passion would be even more shocking.
When Mr. Miller arrived his dour and pedantic Scot was a welcome, light respite. There were no ‘passengers’ in this cast. In the full courtroom scenes even the non-speakers’ concentration never faltered. Neither did the attention of the audience.
The evening culminated in an unexpected and sombre ending that few would have predicted.
