CHORUS LINE
Theatre 2000
Regent Centre Christchurch November 2005
One Singular Sensation!
Seems like there’s no end to the talent and energy of Theatre 2000 productions. This is a gutsy stage version of a big screen and big stage show production about powerful song and stage presence. The musical follows the auditions of Broadway dancers, desperate to land a chorus role in a new production. Director Zach (played by Steve McTaggart) is a demanding ruthless man, lining up the hopefuls and wanting to know details of their lives, finding out what makes them tick to feed his almost voyeuristic personality. His voice from the spotlit desk at the back of the auditorium brings the audience into the show – almost prying on the audition process.
The characters are portrayed well, particularly the tense relationship between Cassie (Louise King) – amazing voice, and Zach. The singing and arrangement is fantastic and choreography brilliant, the only let down was that these slightly over shadowed the dancing and unfortunately the Regent Centre stage is clearly on the small side for such a big production.
If you fancy some Broadway nostalgia, grab your top hat and tails!
