THE CHALK GARDEN

February 2006

The Chalk Garden, Bournemouth Little Theatre Club, Jameson Road THERE are certain performers locally for whom the use of the word ‘amateur’ seems almost an insult, and when several of them are on stage at the same time the result is simply stunning. And so it is with this production, directed with her now customary flair by Patricia Richardson.
Enid Bagnold’s 50 year old play is beautifully crafted and has stood the test of time well. It is set in a Sussex home where the lack of genuine emotion on the part of the owner, Mrs St Maugham, is eerily matched by the lack of growth in her barren garden. Until, that is, the arrival of the mysterious Miss Madrigal (Tanya Alexander) to act as governess to Laurel (Natasha Barnes), grand-daughter of Mrs St Maugham (Enid Rothwell).
These three actresses inhabit their roles as if born to them, and are absolutely outstanding. Matthew Ellison, as manservant Maitland, is also eminently watchable and possesses that same ability to simply ‘be’ his character.
Props and costumes are superb, and there is a magnificent set (built by David Weeks), although a rear door with a mind of its own caused, on Tuesday at least, a number of interesting unscripted moments and more than a few laughs.
