THE CHRISTMAS CAROL
New Forest Players
Memorial Hall
New Milton
December 2005

Christmas came to New Milton this week with New Forest Players production of “A Christmas Carol”. This version of Charles Dickens’ story with music written by Michel Legrand moved swiftly from scene to scene with some clever scene changes but sometimes the magic was lost with the stage crew in full view.
John Teather’s direction and Suzanne Teather’s choreography skilfully moved this large very disciplined cast expertly round the multi-level stage.
This production was very much an ensemble cast with members taking several different cameo roles and some fine singing; especially from Zadie Ward as Young Belle. It was a shame that the music drowned the voices in some scenes. Tim Schuler as Scrooge’s nephew Fred cheerfully guided us through the story and Noel Moran’s long suffering Bob Cratchitt was sensitively played.
Any production of this story is only as good as it’s Scrooge and for me Matthew Ellison was every inch the “grasping, squeezing, wrenching, covetous old sinner” who was shown the error of his ways. His acting and singing were compelling from beginning to end.
All in all this highly enjoyable show left the audience, in the words of one of the songs, with the “Spirit of Christmas“.
