THE WEDDING GUEST STOOD STILL
Broadstone Players
Ballard School New Milton February 2005
THIS show was a typical whodunit, with all the usual clues, red herrings and multiple suspects. The story rattled along quite nicely, and everyone was kept guessing until the end.
There were, however, some key elements missing. The characters were thinly written and many of the cast invented nothing for themselves. The female characters in particular seemed to be clones of each other, apart from Vicky (Caroline McBrearty) who was half way to a character, but needed twice the venom and attack. Just a little more confidence, and she could do it.
The opening scene was a wedding eve, and everyone’s delivery was matter of fact. No prenuptial excitement or jitters? Would you really order a scotch and walk off without it? Would you really enter from a downpour shaking dry raincoats? So it went on.
The cast seemed to leave all the thinking to the director/writer (Marion Watson), who must have slaved long and hard over that script.
The set was well designed and executed, and, all in all, it was a reasonable performance that had the potential to be much better.
