UNDER MILK WOOD
Castle Players
Village Hall Lytchett Matravers April 2005
EVEN before they spoke a single word, the cast of this production earned myriads of gold stars for their ability to remain still on a specially constructed, steeply sloping stage that looked as if it would send everyone tumbling down into the auditorium.
Without that slope though, the dreams of Llareggub’s inhabitants during that ‘starless and bible-black’ night would have been simply in our minds and ears – yet the visual effect, thanks in part to excellent lighting, was superb.
Using a cast of 14 to portray over 50 characters, Jo Puttick’s direction brought the sometimes saucy, often hilarious cameos to vibrant life. And it says reams for the talent and versatility of the cast that they were able to play numerous diverse personalities so convincingly.
The set consisted merely of that sloping stage plus one chair at the back for the blind, all-hearing Captain Cat and two front lecterns for the narrators, so all concentration was on the performers and Dylan Thomas’ gloriously descriptive words.
By the end of the evening I felt I knew Llareggub and everyone it in as well as if I lived there myself - which I almost wished I did.
Glorious entertainment.
