THERE IS SWEET MUSIC
Poole & Parkstone Singers
Barrington THeatre
Ferndown
July 2005

THIS group was formed some seven years ago to accommodate people who wanted to sing but not take part in a full stage musical. But if you’re thinking along the lines of ‘choir, boring’, you couldn’t be more wrong.
The Singers sparkle with the best of them, and not just because of their glittering waistcoats or jewellery. Smiles and animation go a long way when it comes to putting a song across, which is no doubt one of the reasons why they won (at the recent Bournemouth Music Festival) the large shiny cup so proudly displayed on the piano during this concert.
‘The Boss’, Jean Chambers, has whipped everyone into shape with excellent effect. Their singing, whether in a Sound of Music medley, Karl Jenkins selection, Blue Danube Waltzes or Lullaby of Birdland – just a few of the eclectic choices in this super evening – was of an extremely high standard, with outstanding harmonies and a fine balance despite the small number of male voices. And accompanist Mary Potter added her own particular flair too.
I did worry a little that the finger clicking and swaying to Rock Around the Clock might cause problems – but I should have known better. Mission accomplished, I think.
