SUMMER END
Angel Players
Holy Angels Church Hall
Lilliput, Poole
April 2005

This play was an excellent effort by the Angel Players, combining satirical wit and darker social comment.
The two lead roles were of titanic proportions and the two actresses rose to the challenge very well. Emily Baines (Barbara Everard) had a dry, acerbic wit that would have been the envy of Victor Meldrew. May Brewer (Joan Higgins) was delightfully fluffy and dotty, like everyone’s favourite granny. They made a perfect foil for each other. There were, however, more than a few prompts, but, given the size of the parts, it was understandable. Neither allowed it to throw them, or make them drop out of character.
The care assistant Sally (Ginette Turner) was suitably graceless and resentful, while Mrs. Lang the Matron ( Chris Gorman) dripped honey and patience until the end when her true venom and spite was revealed. Alan Baines , the long-suffering son (Ron Kite) was earnest and exasperated. Poor soul was still smarting, years later, from his Mother’s soap cure for constipation.
The audience loved it, and the laughs came thick and fast, but, as with all good comedy, it was tinged with tragedy at how awful a bad rest home can be.
