STEEL MAGNOLIAS
Victoria Players
Burgate School Drama Studio
Fordingbridge
May 2005

WHAT a wonderful, true-to-life production this was. Brilliantly and innovatively directed by Sarah Farr, it had the stamp of quality written all over it from the first-class set & excellent props to the outstanding performances.
The play is set in Truvy’s Beauty Shop in Chinquapin, Louisiana, and it was particularly impressive that the ‘southern state’ accents were maintained throughout – a rare joy.
I was reaching for the tissues very early on, as bride-to-be Shelby (a superb Sarah Newman) suffered a diabetic ‘hypo’. But everyone had their tale to tell, and as we were drawn into the diverse lives of these southern belles I know I wasn’t the only one moved by the traumas and highlights of their lives.
Every one of these ladies – Sarah Pollard (Truvy), Natasha Wilson (Annelle), Betty Price (Clairee), Jill Saunders (M’Lynn) and Jo Etheridge (Ouiser) – lived their character through and through. Each was so utterly believable that I am still visualising Annelle’s mad landlady, Ouiser’s pink-skinned dog, Truvy’s wayward sons, Clairee’s radio debut and M’Lynn’s long vigil at her daughter’s bedside.
I laughed, I cried, and I loved every second of this deeply moving tale of women’s support for each other.
