ROLE PLAY
Ferndown Drama Group
Barrington Theatre Ferndown April 2005
Role Play is an Ayckbourn gem, which was skilfully and effortlessly delivered by this very talented cast.
Watching Julie-Ann’s (Trish Binding) complacent world come crashing down, and her boyfriend (David Nielson) running for cover was highly amusing. Her mother and father (Jenny Sibley and John Pemble) were a no-nonsense Yorkshire couple with such a nice line in unfunny jokes and terrible guffaws that you couldn’t help giggling.
Paige ( Dawn Hollington) seemed to explode onto the stage, and kept the heat up thereafter. There were, however, two performances that stood out especially. One was Arabella (Micki Bennet), dotty, permanently tipsy and direct from the ministry of funny walks. The other was Micky (Chris Green) who brought new meaning to the phrase “Dumb Animal”. I never saw such an endearing thug. Both characters were hilarious and superbly executed.
Director Clifford Page obviously has good command of his craft, as this drama will testify. He pulls out everything his cast have to give.
Why so few in the audience? Does Ferndown not know what a treat awaits them at the Barrington Theatre?
