ROAD TO BROADWAY
BBLOC
De La Salle Theatre
Southbourne
Bournemouth
November 2004

AT this concert to celebrate BBLOC’s 50th anniversary, compere David Gillard explained that the philosophy of founding chairman Arthur Ball was that “the tea lady is as important as the leading lady.”
That ethos obviously holds good today, as programmes were being sold by present chairman Brenda Baker and even the ‘tea lady and gentleman’ made an appearance – but more of that anon.
The evening was devised and musically directed by Ian Peters (with an excellent 3-piece band) with choreography by Gaynor Adnett & Judi Knight. It consisted of song and dance from shows ranging from Fiddler On The Roof to Chicago, and was cleverly hung on a storyline illustrating how a show evolves from audition to performance.
And it was perhaps indicative of the company’s continuing success that they were able to produce 23 soloists out of an on-stage total of 32, a great vocal sound and some superb dancing.
As the song says, You Gotta Get A Gimmick (incidentally, one of the best numbers in the concert), and whether it’s ‘doing it with finesse’, blowing a horn, lighting yourself up or, like the ‘tea lady and gentleman’, launching into a number, this company has certainly learned the way to get ahead.
