MUSIC FOR THE MOVIES
Wimborne Musical Theatre Society
Tivoli Theatre
Wimborne
November 2004

Music From The Movies, Wimborne Musical Theatre Society, Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne FILM music seems to be all the rage at the moment, and this concert, directed by Roy Joseph, provided an eclectic mix to satisfy the most discerning film score buff. The company was small – just 13 ladies and 6 men – but what they lacked in numbers they made up for in sound. The vocal standard was high from both chorus and principals as they sang their way through such gems as Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines, As Time Goes By, Lullaby of Broadway, The Rose and A Spoonful of Sugar. In the first half there was minimal movement, and with few solos to break the pattern it did seem to drag a little, although it came to a very energetic end with a colourful Rhythm of Life. Part two fared better, with two or three costume changes – everyone looked a million dollars – and several superb solos, not least from Sharron Pearcy, Heather Pretlove, Kathy Hayman and Syd Young. There was also excellent dance accompaniment during both Feed the Birds and Jean Lugsden’s piano solo, the Warsaw Concerto, from members of the Murilova Ballet School, and the three-piece band made a fine sound throughout.
