MINI MUSICAL MOMENTS
One-Off Pantomine Society
Barrington THeatre
Ferndown
July 2005

ONE thing OOPS has in abundance is enthusiasm, and this evening of excerpts from stage and screen musicals positively bubbled over with it.
Director S L Thornton and musical director Colin Petheram worked the group hard, and from tiny tots to ancients – the programme description, not mine! – everyone gave of their best, whatever their experience. Dance routines were good – I particularly liked the Arabian Nights number – and songs, ranging from Viva Las Vegas, Black Hills of Dakota and Doin’ What Comes Naturally, to A Couple of Swells, One and Can You Feel the Love Tonight, were lively and well put across.
But the microphones did not always appear to be working, and vocalists were competing against over-loud sound from the keyboard speakers, a battle they sometimes lost.
That was such a shame, because it seems to be the society’s policy to give everyone a chance to shine and it would have been lovely to hear them all clearly. However, the animated expressions and sheer enjoyment shone through regardless.
Someone had clearly worked extremely hard on costumes, as they were many and varied, and the deceptively simple set served its purpose admirably. And the idea of having various company members introducing each section worked a treat too.
