ME AND MY GIRL
Bournemouth & Boscombe Light Opera Company (BBLOC)
Pavilion Theatre Bournemouth May 2005
YOU may not be planning to go down Lambeth way this week, but if you should find yourself down Bournemouth way instead, this is one show you really shouldn’t miss.
BBLOC doesn’t do things by halves, so no expense has been spared to bring the audience the best – and it shows. But even the brightest costumes and sets and brilliant lighting & sound would be nothing without a good production team and a great cast, and this company most certainly has those.
Musical director Ian Peters, who also conducts a fine orchestra, ensures that the singing is second-to-none, and, thanks to director and choreographer Martyn Knight, there’s an energy and excitement that shines the whole way through and makes even the tiniest roles and lowliest chorus members stand out.
Frank Ewins plays cockney barrow boy turned heir Bill Snibson, and both he and Becky Weeks, as his girlfriend, Sally, are an absolute joy, blending humour and pathos like seasoned professionals.
There is humour aplenty too from Sally Wheeler (Lady Jaqueline), David Bate (Gerald) and Ian Metcalfe (Parchester), while Cherrill Ashford (Maria, Duchess of Dene) and John Gerken (Sir John) also give outstanding performances.
Once you get down Lambeth way…
