LAST TANGO IN LITTLE GRIMLEY and FOUR SEASONS
Zenith Theatre Company
St Aldhelm's Hall Branksome, Poole October 2004
LUCKILY Zenith Theatre, unlike Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society, seems to have no problem whatever in finding an audience. And maybe that’s because their regulars know that whatever the company does, it puts in 110% effort.
Last Tango in Little Grimley is about the aforementioned society’s last-ditch efforts to stave off closure in the face of dwindling numbers, and this production was an absolute hoot from start to finish.
The four characters – Len Murray’s camp, petulant chairman, Gordon; Mark Hampshaw’s bolshie set-builder, Bernard; Ann Whitaker’s sweet, nervous Joyce and Sheila Garrett’s wonderfully overpowering Margaret – were beautifully played and an absolute joy to watch.
The second part of the evening was an excellently costumed revue played out on a stunningly dressed set filled with flowers, leaves and, later, snow and a brightly lit Christmas tree. The 16-strong cast sang and danced their way through seasonal songs ranging from Stormy Weather and Summer Holiday to Autumn Leaves and Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, with the occasional poem thrown in for good measure.
And any shortcomings in the vocal department were more than compensated for by the company’s totally infectious enthusiasm, making for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
