KING ARTHUR PENDRAGON
Zenith Theatre Company
St Aldhelms Church Hall Branksome, Poole July 2005
AN evening with Zenith and one of their ‘home grown’ shows is generally a very enjoyable experience, but on this occasion they may have bitten off rather more than they could chew. And sadly no wizardry or knights in shining armour could really have helped.
The problem seemed to be in the decision to take the whole thing too seriously – the one token comedy number, Be A Clown, seemed completely out of place. One of the things this company does particularly well is to send itself up, and I really felt that the story, which was well written by Ann Whitaker, would have lent itself easily to that treatment.
I don’t suggest in any way that everyone did not work extremely hard, because they certainly did, and there were some strong performances. But there were many long pauses when people failed to appear or simply forgot their words, and the numerous scene changes caused problems of their own. And, with the exception of the excellent If He Ruled The World and Night Of A 1000 Stars, the songs really did not suit the voices of those singing them.
As ever, props, sets and costumes were outstanding, but…
