WHEN an audience is stunned into silent stillness during a production you know you are watching something very special, and so it was with this truly remarkable play.
Its background is the movement of thousands of children, mostly Jewish, from Germany to England just prior to World War II. It centres on one girl, Eva, who is so affected by her experiences that she denies her roots and changes her identity. Many years later her daughter discovers long-hidden photographs and papers in the attic, forcing Eva, now known as Evelyn, to finally confront her past.
Being surrounded by actors of the calibre of Lin Denning, Lolly Endacott and Jane Sykes perhaps inspired 16 year-old Hayleigh Birks in her portrayal of the young Eva, and she gave a performance that was quite simply outstanding. From the frightened 9 year-old German evacuee to the headstrong naturalised English teenager, she developed her character effortlessly and at times unbearably touchingly. Her journey encompassed German, broken and standard English, none of which proved any obstacle to this hugely talented teenager.
Helen Davison’s excellent direction plus a fine set, superb costumes and marvellous lighting effects, not to mention a wonderful cast (completed by Georgette Ellison, John James and Laetitia Ellison), ensured that this was a production which will long stay in the memory.
