IT'S CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD
Unison Theatrical Choir
Memorial Hall
West Moors
December 2004

THIS thoughtfully compiled concert, directed by Sonia Gilson, was crammed full of unusual Christmas prose, carols and fun from around the globe, with the theme even extending to the interval refreshments – German chocolate-covered gingerbread, Scottish shortbread and Italian cake.
In fact, all the ingredients of the season were there, so the evening began with an amusing, if slightly irreverent, ‘Nativity Play’, also featured a potted version of Aladdin and –naturally – gave the audience a chance to sing a few carols. Along the way – and a colourful way it was too, with numerous effective costume changes – we were treated to such delights as the Skaters’ Waltz, stories of Norway and France at Christmas, a tale of a giraffe’s Christmas stocking and part of Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales. And the carols – Hawaiian, American, German, Czech, Barbadian and more – were a really pleasant change from the usual seasonal fare.
Oh, and then there was the fat little robin that rushed through the auditorium searching for crumbs, a lesson in being kind to turkeys and an ex-pat’s thoughts on why Christmas is better in England than in Spain.
Well, I bet they don’t have concerts like this in Spain, for a start.
