I'LL GET MY MAN
KCA Players
Kinson Community Centre, Pelhams Kinson June 2005
IT’S worth bearing the sweltering heat to see this delightful production, and I can almost guarantee that if you do you’ll leave the theatre with a smile on your face.
The story – vicar decides to advertise for a wife after his live-in sister sacks the housekeeper, with everything further complicated by the arrival of his TV star cousin, Peter – is undoubtedly far-fetched, but hugely funny and extremely well-written.
Steve Watton has done a cracking job with the direction, and it really is a laugh a minute as Jeremy Smith’s wonderfully vague vicar Arthur Humphrey does battle with not only his own confusion but also his domineering sister, Harriette (a superb Bron Littlewood) as he unsuccessfully deals with the sudden interest in his bachelor status.
And there are many more laughs from Steve James, who simply revels in the role of actor cousin Peter – his scenes as a pseudo-vicar are hilarious – and from an excellent Anne Robertson as housekeeper and avid fan Mrs Carter.
There are super performances too from Judy Harris (Winifred Barrington-Locke), Jean Gell (an unforgettable Josephine de Brissac) and David Wickham (Bishop of Lax), while Verity Brayshaw (Pixie Potter) and Mike O’Grady (photographer) make the most of their small roles.
