HOBSON'S CHOICE
New Forest Players
Performing Arts Centre
Ballard School
New Milton
November 2004

MAYBE it was the challenge of performing in such a fine new venue, or perhaps there was some other reason, but this excellent production, directed by Sonia Collyer, was one of the best I have seen from this company.
The Victorian world of the Hobsons and their Salford shoe shop burst thrillingly into life, due in no small measure to a superb set, marvellous props – wherever did they find all those clogs? – and magnificent costumes, but mainly because of the outstanding performances of the major principals, Terry Langford (Henry Hobson), Sarah Haberfield (Maggie Hobson) and John Tickner (Willie Mossop). All three inhabited their characters right down to the fingertips, and better performances you would have been hard-pressed to find anywhere.
There were strong characterisations too from Georgette Ellison and Olivia Kelly as Maggie’s sisters Alice and Vickey, and from John James and Caine Morsett as their fiancés Albert Prosser and Fred Beenstock. And, among the smaller roles, Michael Collyer (Tubby Wadlow) and Adam Ogilvie (Dr MacFarlane) also made their presence felt.
In fact, attention to detail was evident in every aspect of this production, and it paid off as handsomely as Willie’s skill as a cobbler.
