HERE I GO AGAIN
Wessex Corn Dollies
Tivoli Theatre Wimborne October 2004
IF it was possible to package enjoyment and sell it, the Corn Dollies could make a fortune. Rarely have I seen a group of people taking such obvious pleasure in their performance, and to such good effect. The feel-good factor was there in spades and anything less than a thoroughly good time was simply not an option.
Effervescent, stylish and animated to their fingertips, this 28-strong group of ladies will apparently sing “anything, anywhere”. I can’t vouch for the latter, but certainly during the course of this excellent evening they sang everything from standards and show songs to jazz, Carpenters and The Mamas and Papas.
The second half of the show featured the ladies in a selection of songs from their repertoire, plus Chris Carrington’s accordion group and fine male barbershop quartets Vocalise and silver medal winners By Appointment. And the first half found the beautifully dressed company at a wedding celebration – cue for almost every relationship-type song imaginable, plus a delightful Flash Bang Wallop from a group of youngsters. It was a clever idea complete with vicar (musical director Paul Cousins, who surely deserves a medal for his obvious hard work) and other memorable characters and was, like the entire evening, an absolute joy.
