THE GHOST TRAIN
Knollsea Productions
Mowlem Theatre
Swanage
June 2005

THIS drama first saw the light of day in 1925, and it was rather unfortunate that one or two of the cast gave the impression that they had not read the script since that time, so tenuous was their grip on their lines on opening night.
As a consequence there were times when the action almost ground to a halt, including the point at which the actual tale of the ‘ghost train’ was being revealed – or rather not, as it turned out.
But, memory lapses apart, this was actually an enjoyable production in many ways. The story of a group of people stranded at a deserted station overnight, where they are almost scared to death by the strange events that occur, is thoroughly gripping. And excellent lighting and sound effects (although the ‘rain’ did drown out voices a little) added to the sense of impending doom. The run-down waiting room set created just the right atmosphere too.
There were some impressive characterisations too among the 11-strong cast. James Chelton stood out as Teddie Deakin, with his initial ‘silly ass’ character in complete contrast to the one he assumed when his true identity was revealed. And Gail Green also effected a similarly effective transformation as Julia Price.
