BLITHE SPIRIT
Ferndown Drama Group
Barrington Theatre Ferndown October 2004
I admit cheerfully that this is one of my favourite plays, and this production, directed by Martin Bellchamber, is as enjoyable as any I have seen.
The setting is a dinner party given by author Charles Condamine, after which he intends to hold a séance so that he can learn a few professional secrets from local medium Madame Arcati, with a view to including them in his new book. But unfortunately things fail to work out as planned, and he gets considerably more than he bargained for.
Perhaps Stephen Hawker is not quite the suave Charles one might expect, but he does an excellent line in exasperated bewilderment, and Trish Binding is on fine form as his second wife, Ruth.
There are first-class performances too from Bob Johnson and Jenny Sibley (Dr and Mrs Bradman) and Adele Edmund (Edith), but the stars of the show, for me, are Micki Bennett (Madame Arcati) and Dawn Hollington (Elvira). Both have an excellent sense of timing and give their characters that indefinable something that make them eminently watchable.
Sets, costumes, lighting and props are superb and despite the play’s length – 3 hours including intervals – the time flew by.
