ANYTHINK FLO'S!
Highcliffe Charity Players
St Marks Hall Highcliffe July 2005
ONE of the lovely things about my theatregoing at this end of the Curtain Call season is that there are a fair number of ‘end of term treats’ during which I can sit back and enjoy without having to think too hard.
This particular show certainly fell into that category. Songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and less familiar Broadway hits such as The Boy From Oz, Wicked and Hairspray, sketches galore and a very welcome ploughman’s supper during the interval were the perfect ingredients for a highly enjoyable evening.
The 16-strong company was excellently directed by Andrea Young and Georgina & Matthew Smith, with outstanding choreography by Carly Simmerling and Georgina. And although this year there were backing tracks rather than a live band, musical director Ian Carter’s rehearsal input was plain in the quality of the singing.
All the musical numbers, which also included a lively Mambo Tonight! Section, were a blast, and among the sketches I just loved those about an optician’s shop, a phobia counselling session, a bookseller’s and a ballet.
But then there was nothing I failed to enjoy in this colourful, fast-moving, beautifully costumed evening, performed by one of the most talented groups around.
