ALI BABA and the FORTY THIEVES
CoMad group
Colehill Memorial Hall Colehill, Wimborne February 2005
GIVE me a panto with an appealing animal in it and I’m as happy as a – well, you get the picture.
So when Miranda the Camel (Pam Mizon & Sarah Kelsey) lumbered down the aisle accompanying her master, Ali Baba (KD Johnson), who was giving out gold and silver coins to all and sundry – except me, that is – I was laughing my head off, at least until she spat at me. Well, they did say she had a tendency to do that, and perhaps she knew why I was there…
There were plenty of other things about this show that appealed too, especially the big crowd scenes, which worked well. And there were jokes and sing-along numbers galore, and some super performances. I especially liked Peter Hardwick and Jill Laybourne as Ali’s posh brother and sister-in-law, Cassim & Jelli, Andy Trant and Sally Atkins as baddies Salim the Mean & Semolina the Meaner, Danny Light and Jackie Cornish as would-be baddies Haneef & Basher and 11 year-old Ben Cornish as hypnotist Luke Intumi’ize (geddit?)
But the production suffered badly from too many over-long pauses, and it was a clear mistake for the direction to have been a team effort. Now that camel seemed a strong-willed type. Perhaps next year…
