THE WIZARD OF OZ
Poulner Players
Poulner Church Hall
Poulner, Ringwood
February 2004

I HAD a cold and felt decidedly under the weather, but this bright, colourfully costumed and beautifully performed production, directed by Simon Sketchley, quickly made me feel on top of the world.
A tiny stage proved no barrier whatsoever, so there were characters flying, magical fire effects, innovative book-style backcloths and superb use of video and lighting to depict the hurricane and, later, the Wizard. And the scene where the Wicked Witch (a brilliantly malevolent Sally Whyte) melts away was simply stunning.
There were strong performances all round, and it was particularly impressive that everyone, from the smallest chorus member upwards, was animated and confident whether singing, dancing or acting. Young Jessica Lax, sharing the role of Dorothy with Lydia Shaw, was appealing and assured and had an excellent rapport with her fellow travellers on the Yellow Brick Road: Lion (Hugh Rossiter), Tin Man (Peter Ansell) and Scarecrow (a very impressive Hannah White).
And what a little star the little dog Toto (Chloe) proved to be, gazing out at the audience without a trace of fear, as if born to the stage. She, like the entire show, was a joy.
