One-Off Pantomine Society Kinson Community Centre Pelhams, Kinson Bournemouth January 2004 Written and directed by Sara Thornton, it followed the adventures of a drama group who are helping Betty Buttermilk (Pauline Giles) find the pantomime animals that have been stolen from her, despite hindrance from the Seven Dwarfs. It was cleverly constructed and allowed the cast – ranging from tiny tots to adult – to dress up as almost every animal imaginable and indulge in plenty of appropriate songs such as Paddy McGinty’s Goat. Plenty of humour, audience participation, excellent sets and costumes and fine musical accompaniment from Colin Petheram added to the overall effect, and there were some really super performances. The ‘theatricals’ – Karen Kennan (director), Annette Mellows (wardrobe mistress), Lynne Trent (make-up lady) and Tanya Brierley, Alison Dale & Christine Hurst (chorus girls) were excellent, while Sally Thornton gave a lovely characterisation as the cat, Astrophe, and Martha Jenkins was just right as the impatient Fairy Nuff. It was also lovely to see so many of the younger cast members given their own short solo spots, and although they found themselves competing against a rather vociferous audience their confidence was a joy to see.
