SWINGING THE BLUES
Light 'n' Shade
Regent Centre Studio
Christchurch
April 2004

THE intimate setting of the Studio was the perfect setting for this first-class evening in which anyone leaving with a case of the blues must surely have worn earplugs and been blindfolded.
Slickness and presentation can add so much to a show, and this very talented company – Tracey Barrington, Aaron Carlo, David Hopkins, Louise King, Martin Mansfield, Georgina Smith, Pete Whittaker and Andrea Young – had it all at their fingertips, with great voices, fluid movement and an added ‘x’ factor that made the whole evening shimmer.
The 40-odd songs ranged from the dreamy (That Old Devil Called Love, Stormy Weather, Moon River) to the up-tempo (Straighten Up and Fly Right, Well Did You Ever, Le Jazz Hot) and were all performed with punch, pzazz, lashings of style and obvious enjoyment. And although I was initially sceptical about the use of backing tapes rather than live music, it all worked a treat. Costumes and lighting were spot-on, the sound balance just right and the free programme and nibbles more than welcome. In fact, there was nothing more they could have done to make the audience feel that this was an evening particularly well spent.
And the song’s so right – it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing. And boy, did it swing.
