SOUND OF MUSIC
Wimborne Musical Theatre Society
Tivoli Theatre
Wimborne
June 2004

The Sound of Music, Wimborne Musical Theatre Society, Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne GIVEN that most people know this show mainly as one of the most outstanding film musicals of all time, any company attempting to stage it has its work cut out to compensate for the lack of scenic panoramas that were responsible for much of the film’s success.
WMTS couldn’t bring the mountains into the Tivoli, but they have managed pre-show birdsong, mist and sounds of trickling streams to create the right atmosphere.
And the show itself, directed with flair and originality by Roy Joseph, beautifully choreographed by Suzi de Villiers and well conducted by Alan Beech, is as lovely as one could wish for. The show-stealing children, led by Samantha Scott as Liesl and Lee Redwood as Friedrich, are a charming, confident and ever-smiling delight. And Sharron Pearcy is absolutely perfect as their governess and soon-to-be stepmother, Maria, while Mike Stephenson is suitably dour as their stolid father, Captain Von Trapp.
There are outstanding performances too from Heather Pretlove (Mother Abbess), Gaynor Adnett (Baroness Schraeder), Kenneth Jones (Max) and Michael Leggett (Rolf), and all the smaller roles are also well played.
The part-sung curtain call doesn’t entirely work, but otherwise it’s a show that’s well worth climbing a mountain to see.
