SCROOGE
Arena Theatre
Regent Centre
Christchurch
November 2003

SOMEHOW it just wouldn’t be December without Charles Dickens’ mean old skinflint making an appearance, so if you’re feeling jaded with the whole seasonal business, a visit to the Regent this week should put you right back in the Christmas spirit.
In Tim Wallace-Abbott’s lively and tear-jerking production, which unfortunately suffered a few first-night sound problems, the only Dickensian feature lacking is the snow. That apart, a cleverly designed set and excellent lighting and effects keep the entire audience agog as Ebenezer Scrooge spends his worst-ever Christmas night.
Fine actor Lee Tilson is wonderfully effective as the curmudgeonly old miser, and his transformation to benevolent gentleman is a joy to watch. And John King puts his own stamp on ghostly Jacob Marley by giving him a Welsh accent and slightly humorous manner.
Conversely, Max White’s Ghost of Christmas Present is not quite the jovial chap one might expect – too much good living, perhaps - , but Sarah-Louise Davis is an endearing and beautifully spoken Ghost of Christmas Past and Denis Chrisman’s Ghost of Christmas Future as eerie as they come. There are lovely characterisations from the other principals too, and a great chorus, while the band, under musical director Jonathan Spratt, makes a fine contribution.
