PLAYS'N'CHIPS 13
Broadstone Players
War Memorial Hall
Broadstone
September 2003

THEY say that 13 is unlucky for some, but that certainly does not apply to the Players, whose annual play and supper evenings just get better and better. It is the one occasion in the year when priority is given to would-be performers and directors, but a sprinkling of established members ensures that the newcomers are not quite thrown to the wolves.
The evening’s four plays could not have been more different: Last Post, by Jean McConnell, a two-hander about deception; Tea, Set and Match, by local playwright Sean Street, a cleverly constructed conversation between two point-scoring Welsh ladies, overseen by an ‘umpire’; harrowing excerpts from Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, and the comic, quirky Committed, by Players’ member James Cooke.
The long-standing members set a high standard that was reached by everyone involved – proof, if it were needed, of what even inexperienced performers and directors can achieve with teamwork. It was particularly satisfying to see that those of last year’s first-timers who took part once more have gained tremendously in confidence, and every one of the brand-new members showed considerable potential that augurs well for the future of the Players.
