PARTY PIECE
Victoria Players
Burgate School Drama Studio
Fordingbridge
October/November 2003

THE pleasure of theatre is, for me, to be transported into another world for a couple of hours - but sometimes it proves to be a world where I would rather not be, and sadly this Richard Harris comedy fell into that category.
It was not, I hasten to add, any reflection on the hard-working cast – Steve Cross, Jo Etheridge, Linda Shaw, Kevin Bracey-Wright, Anne Mitchell, Tim Norton and Sarah Pollard – but solely because of the story, which is set in the back gardens of two adjoining homes.
In the first a rather overbearing husband and his put-upon wife are coping with a series of disasters as they prepare for a party that their friends plainly do not want to attend. Next door a middle-aged son is trying to do the best for both his mother and his wife, who dislike each other intensely, and pleasing neither.
Although there were moments of comedy, both situations were just too true to life to be really amusing, and by the end of the evening I felt as depressed as the characters themselves. But the set, complete with sheds, pond and usual garden paraphernalia, plus totally realistic house-backs with real guttering and opening windows, was simply outstanding.
