ZENITH'S OLYMPIAD
Zenith Theatre Company
St Aldhelms Hall
Branksome, Poole
July 2004

IF there were prizes for originality there is no doubt that Zenith would be among the contenders, because this evening of sport-related songs, sketches and dances, loosely (very!) based on the olympics, was out there on its own.
It is little short of a miracle how designer Ann Whitaker achieves such brilliant results on such a small budget, but her sets, props and costumes - Edwardian Dress for the Ascot Gavotte, school uniforms for a St Trinians hockey match, Greek outfits for the Olympic opening ceremony and red, white and blue for the finale, to name but a few - were, as always, glorious.
And of the show’s content itself, dance numbers were particularly impressive, especially an excellent Bolero. Sketches mostly worked well too, and the Posh and Becks scene, an Aerobics session and a glorious ‘Fencing Match’ were hilarious although ‘A Question of Sport’ was overly long and did not quite come off.
Musically though, the evening proved rather a mixed bag, because although there were some very good solos and ensemble numbers the company clearly had problems with trying to sing to pre-recorded backing tracks. But let that pass – for sheer effort alone they deserve a medal.
