THE ODD COUPLE
Ferndown Drama Group
Barrington Theatre
Ferndown
October 2003

NEIL Simon’s hilarious play, made famous by the inspired partnership of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, is a masterpiece of comedy. Although the female version may be lesser known it is, on this showing, equally funny and the perfect pick-me-up on a cold, damp autumn evening.
Dawn Hollington just gets better with every part she plays, and in this production she displays a great gift for comedy as the devil-may-care Olive, whose gesture in allowing her newly separated friend, Florence (an excellent Trish Binding), to move in with her goes horribly wrong, turning into a nightmare rather than the companionship she has visualised. The two of them spark beautifully off each other and play their roles to perfection, with brilliant timing and wonderfully subtle body language and facial expressions.
There are lovely characterisations too from the women’s friends Sylvie (Micki Bennett), Mickey (Jenny Sibley), Renee (Verity Brayshaw) and Vera (Gill Greaves), while David Nielsen and Paul Marcus bring out every ounce of humour as Spanish brothers Manolo and Jesus.
With fine, fast-moving direction from Clifford Page, well-sustained accents throughout and an impressive set, this is a virtually faultless production that should be available on the National Health.
