the cast
THANKS to the Elizabeth Taylor/Mickey Rooney film, based on Enid Bagnold’s original book, most people are familiar with the story of Velvet Brown and her Grand National triumph with The Pie, but it is hardly ever seen on stage.
However, director Glenwood Carlyon seems to have a gift for finding heart-warming yet rarely performed plays and bringing them out of obscurity to enchant modern audiences, and this production certainly did that.
Despite a backcloth that would not have been out of place in a pantomime – would you be happy with a mouse on YOUR mantelpiece? – the atmosphere of the Browns’ country cottage was impressively created and the company had clearly taken pains to find the correct costumes and props for the late 1930s setting.

Michael and Judith Dolan were just right as Mr & Mrs Brown and they were well supported by their fellow performers, most of whom were children or teenagers. Almost all spoke their lines clearly and with real feeling, creating highly believable characters, but in Daniel Jones (Mi Taylor) and Victoria Eldon (Velvet Brown) the company has real stars. Neither is older than mid teens yet both oozed copious amounts of stage presence, confidence and technique, making them a joy to watch.
