MAGIC, MYTH & MUSIC
Unison Theatrical Choir
Barrington Theatre
Ferndown
June 2004

UNISON’S summer show was a real pot-pourri, with song, dance, poetry and humour packaged together with a range of absolutely superb costumes to add a professional touch.
Songs from Camelot, Brigadoon and The Phantom of the Opera rubbed shoulders with The Snowman, Puff the Magic Dragon, There Are Fairies at the Bottom of Our Garden and lots more besides, including the delightful Come To Our Pearly Home, sung by two ‘mermaids’. In fact, this was just one of several unusual numbers, and it was lovely to hear so much that was relatively unknown.
However, although both individually and collectively the company makes a good sound, there were too many occasions when musical director Sue Oldrey and accompanist Ken Allen appeared to be invisible to those on stage, and it became a battle to see who would get to the end of the song first.
But, despite this, from small beginnings the company has come on in leaps and bounds, thanks to director Sonia Gilson, and everyone put their numbers across with plenty of enthusiasm and lots of smiles. They made good use of the large stage too, particularly in numbers where movement was required, and entrances and exits were smooth.
