Cranborne Youth Theatre The Village Hall Cranborne July 2004 It was based on The Arabian Nights, but instead of Sheherazade telling tales to keep her man – and her head – the story was updated to feature the declining relationship between a famous football star, Rob Gold (Rob Minns) and his girlfriend, Lydia (Sophie Janes). And this time some members of the 20-strong company had gone a step further than previously, and worked with director Linda Morse to write their own songs based on the fables. Some of the stories stuck closely to the original, some were very modern and relevant to today, but all were performed with the commitment and discipline that seems to be the hallmark of this group, whose ages range from 12 to 18 or so. All the performances were lively, confident and enthusiastic, with everyone plainly enjoying themselves hugely. It was impressive too that they projected their voices well, although occasionally words were spoken a little too fast to be entirely clear. The tales themselves certainly gave food for thought – what a pity that Posh and Becks missed it. Linda Kirkman Courtesy of the Bournemouth Daily Echo |
